Aree Witoelar is an Indonesian-born improviser, teacher, and community builder who has become a key figure in Osloβs improv scene.
He founded Impro Neuf International (INI), Osloβs first English-language improv theatre, which has brought together more than 1000 enthusiasts from over 50 countries. INI later merged with Impro Neuf, creating the inclusive, multicultural community we know today.
Recently elected as Artistic Director for the Oslo Impro Festival 2025, Areeβs mission is to foster inclusivity and belonging within the Impro Neuf community.
With over a decade of teaching experience, Aree has developed improv curricula and trained more than 40 teachers, ensuring that the traditions of Keith Johnstone and Del Close continue to thrive. He is a passionate advocate for diversity in improv, having founded minority representation teams like Rice Eaters, Herring & Chopsticks, and Monosodium Glutamates (MSG). He is also known for producing the acclaimed show Kaleidoscope, inspired by Cloud Atlas.
As a performer, Aree has been active since 2005, performing internationally in Denmark, Canada, Romania, Estonia, Finland, and the USA. In Oslo, he currently performs with The Improv Speakeasy and is known for his playful curiosity and cultural storytelling on stage.
He also hosts Aree & a Friend, a unique show at Impro Neuf where he invites an audience member β even someone with little to no stage experience β to join him in an improvised duo show.
Offstage, Aree has worked as a scientist, specializing in Machine Learning, Computational Neuroscience, and Statistical Genetics. His research papers have been cited over 5,800 times.
Areeβs dedication to community, inclusivity, and creativity has made him a beloved figure in the global improv scene. He brings joy, insight, and passion to everything he does.
