π Welcome to this special improv workshop with our international guest teacher:
Malcolm Morrison is a New Zealand based improviser, director, and teacher specializing in long-form narrative and genre-based shows. Two time winner of the Top Teacher award at the New Zealand Improv Festival (2021 & 2023), he has created over 30 unique shows over his 20 year career. Recently, Malcolm has been exploring how to effectively do improvised horror with the show It Came From Beyond The Script and having fun with cheesy sitcoms. Malcolm teaches a wide variety of workshops including long-form skills, creating character depth, genre deep-dives, and show creation workshops.
β¨ Workshop Focus:
This workshop will be exploring the 'mundane fantastic' genre, which asks questions such as "What social anxieties do monsters have?", "What do Cthulhu cultists do on dates?", or "How the heck did Dr. Destruction manage to hire such an extensive workforce of minions?"
It's in the name: the mundane fantastic genre explores the mundane side of the other-worldly. We take the characters and tropes of fantasy, science-fiction, horror, and other fantastic genres, then explore the gaps. If that's true, then what? How does that work logistically? How does that make you feel? Asking these predicated on the fundamental assumption that every character is human in thought and emotion.
Participants can expect to get two main things out of this workshop: how to world-build effectively, and how to both normalize the fantastic and make the normal fantastic. We will explore how accepting offers differently has radically different results and how to superimpose human values onto the unknown.
**BONUS... in the works...tbc**
[TBD] Watch this space for updates a separate event will be made shortly with details... There may be an improv jam in the evening with an audience in Lillesalen which will give workshop participants a chance to demonstrate their skills learned through the day + the opportunity to share the stage with our special international guest!
