Workshop topic
I was introduced to the concept of magical realism by Paula Galimberti at the Sofia Improv Festival, and I would love to explore it further with you!
What is magical realism?
Magical realism is a style of storytelling in which extraordinary, magical, or surreal events take place in an otherwise ordinary, realistic world. The magic is treated as a natural part of everyday life, rather than something surprising or needing an explanation.
Unlike fantasy, magical realism doesn't create a separate magical world. Instead, it blurs the line between reality and imagination, allowing the impossible to coexist with the familiar.
In improvisational theatre, magical realism invites us to explore unusual situations while keeping our characters and their emotions grounded in reality. The magic may be extraordinary, but the human reactions and relationships remain believable.
The key principle: "The extraordinary is ordinary."
In this two-hour workshop, we'll play with the impossible, embrace the unexpected, and discover how a little magic can reveal something very real about being human.
